I definitely think that the two things will be tied together in a serious way - however I think that since the gPhone has been in the works a whole lot longer than the initiative for this social network that they are, in fact, two separate initiatives.

i would suggest that google is launching the gphone to keep pace with Nokia whose series of acquisitions in the last 6 months makes them look a lot like Google...
